Hay Group Cycle Event 2009 raises funds for 30 bicycles for Uganda

30 December 2009

The Hay Group Cycle Event is a yearly cycle tour of people linked to the Hay Group in Zeist (the Netherlands). This year 6 of the 35 participants (Dennis, Dirk-Jan, Frank, Linda, Marianne and Wendela) combined the cycling challenge with fundraising for Cycling out of Poverty. A total of €871 was raised by completing a number of competitive and frivolous challenges in the French Vercors on the 19th and 20th of June 2009. The climb of the Col de Mont Noir was a true physical challenge, whereby participants tried to cycle within a certain timeframe, minimum fall behind, or minimum placing. The amount raised, which is doubled by Impulis, will be used to acquire 30 bicycles for health workers in Uganda. These bicycles are used to increase accessibility of medical facilities in rural villages, for instance by using bicycle ambulances. 4 students of Delft University of Technology start designing African bicycle

5 November 2009

In Kisumu Kenya, Cycling out of poverty is setting up a workshop where bicycles will be sold, repaired and modified. In recent years Cycling out of poverty has provided a large number of bicycles on micro credit to small entrepreneurs in Africa. However, more and more small entrepreneurs indicate that the average African bicycle is not adequate for their businesses. Therefore, the workshop will make modified bicycles available for entrepreneurial development. A team of students of Delft University of Technology started working on designing a multi-functional African bicycle. The project team consists of 4 ambitious and motivated industrial design engineering students. During the last 3 weeks the students have made a assessment of what type of bicycle is needed. They have interviewed boda boda riders, street venders, discussed their ideas with a group of students of the local polytechnic and visited shops that provide bicycle components and building materials. During the following months they will start working on the designs. To read more about the African Bicycle Design team, click here for their blog.

The opening ceremony was directed by the Executive Secretary of Ngeruka Sector representing local authorities who the asked participants to follow the lessons adequately. In fact it is for their advantage to know how institutions of micro finances function because currently according to the policy of Rwandan Government all people have to collaborate with the Bank to execute projects development. The given courses concerned: history of the micro finances and the present situation in Rwanda; the work of micro finance institutions; how to save and to have access to the various credits; financial documents necessary for a Cooperative and how to use them. At the end participants declared that they are satisfied with this seminary and committed to put in practice everything they learned concerning micro finances. On the 22nd of October a second training took place, this time on bicycle repair and maintenance. The lessons included: parts of the bicycle; maintenance of the bicycle: lubrication, brakes, inflation; how to use the bicycle: control of the weight and other orders; official documents for a bicycle; convenient modes: how to avoid damage bicycle, working hours. Support a new project in Gakenke, Rwanda

20 October 2009

Besides the project in Ngeruka, a new project will start in Gakenke in Rwanda. Even though the regions are only a few kilometres apart, they have very different features. Ngeruka faces drought, while Gakenke is a fertile and moist mountainous area, where people grow a unbelievable array of crops. Food is not a problem here. However, the village Ruri is very remote. A small dirt road leads from the capital city Kigali 40 km through the moutains to Ruri. Only few vehicles ply this route, making it difficult for inhabitants of Ruri to transport their produce to the market in Kigali. They are dependining on others for transport of their corps, what is reflected in the revenues. The people in Ruri want, besides a better road, to be able to transport their own products to the market. They have applied for bicycles on micro credit. Click on the video for more information, and support this project. If the fund raising goes well, the first bicycles can already be handed over in November 2009. For more information about this project, click here to go to the project page. The funds raised for this project are doubled by Impulis.

Bicycles recollected in Alibi 2, Togo

15 September 2009

The project in Alibi 2 in Togo faces some serious challenges. Our local partner reports: “In Alibi 2, the repayment of the credit is still difficult for beneficiaries. Maybe it is the negative effects of the long political crisis on the social and economical life of the population or it is just a bad willing developed by the Alibi 2’s women to respect their engagements. Alibi 2’s chief and his notables regret the situation. We have cancelled the contract with the beneficiaries and the bicycles have been recollected from them. To continue collecting money in this way we are taking risks of life for accepting to help people. We refer the situation to the chief to discuss the challenges the women are facing. The bikes collected will be given away to other women.”

Repayment time reduced in Ngeruka Rwanda

10 September 2009

Last July our partner organisation in Rwanda attended the meeting with all our partners in which we discussed the challenges and lessens learned of the different projects. One of the elements discussed was the repayment time. Many of partners had the experience that a relatively short repayment time works most effectively, since people tent to not take the repayments seriously when spread out over a long time. Our contact person in Rwanda reports that he has shared this with the group in Ngeruka who started the bicycle micro credit project with the intention to pay over 18 months. “The recipients committed to reduce the time of repayment that passed from 18 months to 6 months and the repayments are made themselves in an efficient way.” “Furthermore, the second group of people in Ngeruka are sensitized with regard to the credit bicycle and wait for the beginning of the project to be trained on the system of micro credit and the basis notions of bicycles repair and finally to receive the bicycles that they will have to repay according to the contract that will be made.” Cycling out of poverty is still fund raising for this new group of beneficiaries in Ngeruka. Click here for more information about this project. Please support this project and donate to Cycling out of poverty Bank accountnumber 90.61.46.356 (IBAN: NL68 SNSB 0906146356 and Swiftcode: SNSBNL2A)

Third bicycle microfinance meeting, 8-11 July 2009 Naivasha (Kenya) PART 2

26 July 2009

During the meeting with African organisations about bicycle micro finance projects, also the wider context of cycling in Africa was discussed. One of the topics was that the bicycle is a tool for poor people to climb (or cycle) out of poverty, but that it is not just a poor men's vehicle: it can also be a lifestyle for middleclass people. Furthermore, the bicycle offers many other benefits (health, etc) that can help fight climate change. The participating African civil society organisations discussed how to approach the authorities to convince them of the importance of cycling. The video (10 minutes) features some of the discussions. For more information about this meeting, visit the page Meeting 2009 Kenya.

Third bicycle microfinance meeting, 8-11 July 2009 Naivasha (Kenya) PART 1

22 July 2009

From 8-11 July a meeting was organised by I-CE and Cycling out of poverty in Kenya with the African partnerorganisations. The meeting was a follow up of the meeting in Burkina Faso in 2007 and the one in Uganda in 2008. During the meeting in Uganda a lot of technical aspects of bicycle micro finance projects were discussed. One of the most important subjects was the sustainability of the projects. How can you manage to give out another 100 bicycles if the beneficiaries have paid off a first round of 100 bicycles? How do you cover the administrative costs involved? The organisations brainstormed about this issue. Furthermore, obstacles in bicycle use were discussed. Bicycle micro finance makes it possible for a large number of people to have access to a bicycle. But what other obstacles are there once people have access to a bicycle? The video (10 minutes) features some of the discussions. For more information about this meeting, visit the page Meeting 2009 Kenya.

New bicycle project for students in Uganda

18 July 2009

Fundraising has started for a follow up Cycle to school project. In this Cycle to school project 100 students and their families in Katakwi district, a former conflict are in North-East uganda, can reveice a bicycle on micro credit. We are targeting this group because a lot of students often have to walk long distances (sometimes more than 20 km) to school. This is an tiring job, students reach school exhausted which is effecting their concentration in class and decreasing their results. This long commuting to school also results in a large drop-out number. Especially girls are dropping out early. Because HIV/AIDS and cultural conflicts have wiped out a complete generation these girls have to take care of the family have to do a lot of tasks in the household. This is hard the combine with school. For more information about this project, visit the page Cycle to school Katakwi 2009 - 2010.

International design challenge in preparation

30 June 2009

In recent years Cycling out of poverty (via our local partner organisations in Africa) has provided a large number of bicycles on micro credit to small entrepreneurs in Africa. By getting access to bicycles this way, their business opportunities increase. However, more and more small entrepreneurs indicate that the average African bicycle is not adequate for their businesses. Carrying larger loads is a challenge with a normal bicycle. Many Africans are very capable of transporting large amounts of products on their bicycle. But there is a need for modified bicycles, fit to the needs of small entrepreneurs. In the Cycling blue for Kenya workshop in Kenya which we are setting up, these modified bicycles will be made. For the process of making designs for these modified bicycles, we want to invite everyone to bring all existing experience and expertise on this issue together. We are therefore creating an international design contest. Do you want to contributed to this with your knowledge, funds or something else, please contact us at luuk @ cyclingoutofpoverty.com.

The funds raised for Cycling out of poverty will be allocated for the Cycle to school project in Katakwi, Uganda. Children of the Hugo de Grootschool en Paulusschool in Arnhem have transformed a white donkey to an idol. They have painted and decorated it. Each donkey has received a unique SMS code. Last Wednesday the donkeys were shown in the Rembrandt Theatre in Arnhem. Click here for photos of the donkeys and their SMS code. Will you help to turn these donkeys into idols? Sms the code of your favourite donkey to 5040. This way you donate 3 euros. (Be aware that only the Sms sent to donkeys with a code starting with a “2” will go to Cycling out of poverty.) On 27th of October an award will be given to the scholar that made the donkey with the most votes, and thus generated the most funds. For more information go to www.eennieuwmillennium.nl.

Follow up project bicycle ambulances in Uganda

28 June 2009

Early 2009 FABIO gave out the first bicycle ambulances in Katakwi district (for more details: Bicycle ambulances in Katakwi 2008 - 2009). These bicycle ambulances are saving lifes each week. But many villages are still very remote and have poor access to good health care. In cooperation with ITDP Europe, Cycling out of poverty is raising funds to make it possible for our local partnerorganisation FABIO to give out 50 more bicycle ambulances in this area. With the assistance of more bicycle ambulances in this area these villages can also improve their access to the medical care, aiming to reduce child mortality and maternal mortality. The bicycle alone will improve the mobility of health workers to visit patients more often. This will result in more people being vaccinated and an improvement of HIV/AIDS information. For mmore information about this project, visit the page Bicycle ambulances in Katakwi 2009 - 2010.

Edvard hands over cheque

26 June 2009

In 4 months time he cycled with his recumbent bicycle through 10 countries from Egypt to South Africa: a ride of circa 12.000 kilometres. With this ride Edvard raised funds for Cycling out of poverty. Family, friends and acquaintances supported Edvard financially, for instance with a fixed amout per kilometre or flat tire. This week Edvard officially handed over the cheque with the total amount raised: €3,297. We would like to thank Edvard for this impressive ride and the great result. For more information about Edvards ride, visit his blog.

Kick off Cycling blue for Kenya project

24 June 2009

In July Cycling out of poverty in cooperation with our local partner organisation Uvumbuzi, will start with the establishment of a workshop for modified bicycles in Kisumu Kenya. There is a need for bicycles for small entrepreneurs, bicycles that are specifically designed for a certain business. For instance bicycle carts, bicycles for (cold) soft drink vendors, bicycles for bread distribution, bicycle taxis etc. The workshop will make these bicycles on demand. This opens up income generating opportunities for local entrepreneurs. This workshop is one of the elements of the Cycling blue for Kenya project, sponsored by KLM. How to continue after the credit crisis? Update project Mwea Kenya

21 mei 2009

Earlier this year we announced that the bicycle micro credit project in Mwea Kenya was facing challenges due to the credit crisis. Our partner organisation in Kenya, Uvumbuzi, was cooperating with a local micro finance organisation for this project. Hence, they have the infrastructure for providing the credit. However, the crisis caused problems for the organisation, making it impossible for them to still use the favourable conditions that were agreed on earlier. Uvumbuzi has decided to still continue with the project, but to handle the project directly with the local community. The beneficiaries have, guided by uvumbuzi, structured themselves in a group, enabling the group to arrange the payments of the beneficiaries. Click on the film for an update. The give out is planned for mid June.

Vervolg fiets-naar-school project op 1%CLUB

13 mei 2009

Edvard Sloots gefinished in Kaapstad

12 mei 2009

Onze rit eindigt bij The Waterfront. Eerste resultaten fietsambulance project in Oeganda

Cycling out of poverty te Nijmegen o.v.v. fietsambulance Oeganda.

Cycling Blue for Kenya

19 april 2009

Update: (micro) credit crisis

31 March 2009

In Kenya they are also experiencing hinder of the credit crisis. The plan was to start with a bicycle project in Mwea late last year. 100 entrepreneurs from Mwea and surroundings would be allegeable via a micro finance organisation for a bicycle on micro credit. This would be the fierst time in the history of Cycling out of poverty that our local partner organisation does not provide the micro credit themselve, but cooperate with a local in micro finance specialised organisation. However, the micro finance organisation Uvumbuzi is cooperating with, was forced to freeze the all budgets late 2008. This caused that the women in the project could not start with the down payments for the bicycle. Furthermore, the micro finance organisatation is looking into changing the rules and conditions of the credits, such as timeframe, etc. This means that the favourable conditions uvumbuzi had organised no longer apply. As soon as the micro finance organisation has announced their new policy and opened up the budgets, we will look into what way we can continue with the project.

Evaluatie van fiets-naar-school projecten in Oeganda

22 maart 2009

50 fietsen uitgegeven in Butagaya, Oeganda

23 februari 2009

eZee Katima to Cape Ride

26 januari 2009

Tweede Goed Nieuws Krant gelanceerd

18 januari 2009

9 januari 2009
