Hay Group Cycle Event 2009 raises funds for 30 bicycles for Uganda
30 December 2009
The Hay Group Cycle Event is a yearly cycle tour of people linked to the Hay Group in Zeist (the Netherlands). This year 6 of the 35 participants (Dennis, Dirk-Jan, Frank, Linda, Marianne and Wendela) combined the cycling challenge with fundraising for Cycling out of Poverty. A total of €871 was raised by completing a number of competitive and frivolous challenges in the French Vercors on the 19th and 20th of June 2009. The climb of the Col de Mont Noir was a true physical challenge, whereby participants tried to cycle within a certain timeframe, minimum fall behind, or minimum placing. The amount raised, which is doubled by Impulis, will be used to acquire 30 bicycles for health workers in Uganda. These bicycles are used to increase accessibility of medical facilities in rural villages, for instance by using bicycle ambulances. 4 students of Delft University of Technology start designing African bicycle
5 November 2009
In Kisumu Kenya, Cycling out of poverty is setting up a workshop where bicycles will be sold, repaired and modified. In recent years Cycling out of poverty has provided a large number of bicycles on micro credit to small entrepreneurs in Africa. However, more and more small entrepreneurs indicate that the average African bicycle is not adequate for their businesses. Therefore, the workshop will make modified bicycles available for entrepreneurial development. A team of students of Delft University of Technology started working on designing a multi-functional African bicycle. The project team consists of 4 ambitious and motivated industrial design engineering students. During the last 3 weeks the students have made a assessment of what type of bicycle is needed. They have interviewed boda boda riders, street venders, discussed their ideas with a group of students of the local polytechnic and visited shops that provide bicycle components and building materials. During the following months they will start working on the designs. To read more about the African Bicycle Design team, click here for their blog.

The opening ceremony was directed by the Executive Secretary of Ngeruka Sector representing local authorities who the asked participants to follow the lessons adequately. In fact it is for their advantage to know how institutions of micro finances function because currently according to the policy of Rwandan Government all people have to collaborate with the Bank to execute projects development. The given courses concerned: history of the micro finances and the present situation in Rwanda; the work of micro finance institutions; how to save and to have access to the various credits; financial documents necessary for a Cooperative and how to use them. At the end participants declared that they are satisfied with this seminary and committed to put in practice everything they learned concerning micro finances. On the 22nd of October a second training took place, this time on bicycle repair and maintenance. The lessons included: parts of the bicycle; maintenance of the bicycle: lubrication, brakes, inflation; how to use the bicycle: control of the weight and other orders; official documents for a bicycle; convenient modes: how to avoid damage bicycle, working hours. At the end recipients have been exhorted to put in practice everything that they learned so that their bicycles works a long time and bring back a lot of profits to their family. Support a new project in Gakenke, Rwanda
20 October 2009
Besides the project in Ngeruka, a new project will start in Gakenke in Rwanda. Even though the regions are only a few kilometres apart, they have very different features. Ngeruka faces drought, while Gakenke is a fertile and moist mountainous area, where people grow a unbelievable array of crops. Food is not a problem here. However, the village Ruri is very remote. A small dirt road leads from the capital city Kigali 40 km through the moutains to Ruri. Only few vehicles ply this route, making it difficult for inhabitants of Ruri to transport their produce to the market in Kigali. They are dependining on others for transport of their corps, what is reflected in the revenues. The people in Ruri want, besides a better road, to be able to transport their own products to the market. They have applied for bicycles on micro credit. Click on the video for more information, and support this project. If the fund raising goes well, the first bicycles can already be handed over in November 2009. For more information about this project, click here to go to the project page. The funds raised for this project are doubled by Impulis.
