Malawi is een klein (circa 3,5x zo groot als Nederland), langwerpig land in het zuidoosten van Afrika, met zo’n 14 miljoen inwoners. Het wordt geheel omsloten door land (Zambia, Tanzania en Mozambique) en een groot deel van Malawi bestaat uit het eveneens langwerpige Malawimeer. Malawi is een voormalig Engelse kolonie en Engels is dan ook de hoofdtaal van het land.
Malawi behoort tot de 14 armste landen van de wereld, op de basis van de Human Poverty Index van de UNDP (2005). De afwezigheid van delfstoffen, het ontbreken van een zee-haven, de traditionele gerichtheid op de verbouw van thee en tabak op plantages, samen met het lage opleidingsniveau van de bevolking maken de economische situatie dramatisch. Daaroverheen is de aids-epidemie gekomen, die een belangrijk deel van de economisch productieve middengeneratie heeft weggevaagd. (bron: wikipedia)
In Malawi werkt Cycling out of poverty samen met Eva Demaya Centre. Eva Demaya is a local NGO and was created in 2001 by the current Managing Director, Jacqueline Kouwenhoven. Its aim is to improve the life of the local community and help its development through health care, orphan care, community assistance, sports, micro-finance and agroforestry activities. It currently employs 45 staff and regularly hosts volunteers from Europe who come and share their skills and knowledge with the staff and community.
The centre aims to offer a quality service to a very rural and poor community which depends mainly on subsistence farming with very few off-farm activities. Transport and communication are very limited in the area and Eva Demaya Centre tries to offer services such as healthcare to improve the lives of the 26,000 people living in the area. The Healthcare programme includes an orthodox clinic, a maternity, an Under-Fives clinic, an HIV/AIDS and VCT programme, a traditional medicine practice and homeopathy.
